Empty homes will be brought back into use for those in need under a £11.7m plan in Greater Manchester to tackle the housing crisis announced today. Civic leaders say the new scheme will alleviate the pressure on temporary accommodation.
Announcing the move on Saturday, Greater Manchester Combined Authority said temporary housing was 'a vital safety net for people facing, or at risk of, homelessness', ensuring individuals and families have a roof over their heads when they need it most.
But the mayor's office said a rise in demand, coupled with a shortage of affordable homes and soaring costs, have left councils 'increasingly reliant on expensive alternatives' like hotels, in turn putting significant strain on town hall budgets when they can't afford it.
