One person is dead, another is in critical condition, and a third is out of danger after they got hit by a REM train on Montreal's South Shore.

Longueuil police said they received a call at around 3:10 a.m. on Saturday, at a time when no scheduled trains were running.

Provincial police confirmed three young men were struck by a REM train near the Du Quartier station. A 19-year-old died at the scene, a 22-year-old is being treated for serious and possibly life-threatening injuries, and another 19-year-old is now out of danger.

The REM communications department told Radio-Canada the incident occurred after "an intrusion onto the tracks."
