SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The runoff election for mayor in Sandy Springs has a new whiff of international politics.

It involves the Middle East and it makes a bit of sense in Sandy Springs, as some Jewish residents there have seen antisemitic flyers distributed in their neighborhoods over the years.

The issue got raised by state Rep. Esther Panitch, the legislature’s only Jewish member. She’s a Democrat who announced she’s supporting Mayor Rusty Paul for re-election.

Though the mayor’s race is technically a nonpartisan race, Paul was once chairman of Georgia’s Republican party.

Panitch made the announcement in a series of social media posts – and took issue with Dontaye Carter, who faces Paul in the runoff.
