Local officials say federal immigration authorities made arrests on Canal Street Saturday.
Police sources say NYPD officers were on the scene when ICE agents arrived, but the NYPD was not given prior notice and left the area.
City Councilmember Christopher Marte told NY1 his constituents called him to the scene.
“Many members of the community texted and called me to come in here because they saw what ICE was doing, and I rushed over here as quickly as I can. By the time I got here, it seemed like they were gone,” Marte said.
“I think what happened here today on Canal Street just shows that federal ICE agents are going to continue to do what we are expecting them to do and taking innocent people off the streets. Us as elected officials have to make sure that we protect everyday New York
