The Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation (CAEF) is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand to reconsider Canada's recognition of a Palestinian state. This call comes after Carney expressed support for a two-state solution during a United Nations General Assembly meeting in late September.
In a letter dated November 17, CAEF Executive Director Andrea Spindel argues that the Palestinian Authority (PA) lacks leadership that genuinely seeks coexistence with Israel. Spindel describes the PA as a regime that "incentivizes and rewards" terrorism, claiming it pays salaries to individuals involved in violent acts, including those responsible for the mass murder on October 7.
Spindel references Palestinian Media Watch, which has documented that various Palestinian factions compete for support by showcasing their acts of terror. She cites Jibril Rajoub, the secretary general of the Fatah Central Committee, who has publicly suggested that the PA should unite with Hamas under the Palestinian Liberation Organization framework. Spindel interprets this as a troubling indication of the PA's true intentions.
"On the one hand, the PA seeks international legitimacy and aid, claiming it fights terror. In reality, the PA’s senior officials publicly reaffirm and even boast of its terror history and a desire to ally with Hamas," Spindel states. She argues that this duplicity is evident to Western audiences and donors, who may mistakenly believe in a rivalry between Fatah and Hamas that favors moderation.
In mid-October, Palestinian Media Watch released a list of individuals benefiting from the PA's "pay-for-slay" program, which rewards terrorists. Many of those listed were reportedly among the individuals released by Israel in exchange for hostages. Spindel criticizes Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the PA since 2005, for what she describes as a pattern of deception that has been overlooked by Western leaders.
"You are demonstrating incredible naivety or willful blindness, and neither serves the interests of Canadians," Spindel writes. She also highlights that PA schools celebrate the events of October 7, which she claims perpetuates a curriculum of hate among Arab children.
Spindel concludes her letter with a stark warning to Canadian leaders: "If you proceed with the reckless idea of recognizing another terror state in the Middle East, sanctioning the Palestinian Arabs to continue to train killers, reward terrorists, celebrate violence, preach and teach Jew hatred, then please tell us how this is different from supporting Nazism?"
