Union College went toe to toe with Muhlenberg, despite having its star player physically compromised. In the end, the host Mules were too much and won the NCAA Division III Football Tournament first-round game 34-26 on Saturday at Scotty Wood Stadium.
In a postgame video call, Union coach Jon Drach said quarterback Patch Flanagan — the Liberty League’s Offensive Player of the Year — had been throwing up for three days and was violently ill. In fact, his illness led to a brief substitution that led to a turnover, which led to a Muhlenberg score. It was the only series he missed, however.
