JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Hundreds of families lined up before sunrise Saturday on Jacksonville’s Northside for a chance to bring home a Thanksgiving turkey. Former Councilman Reggie Gaffney Sr. and Councilman Reggie Gaffney Jr. hosted the annual giveaway, which has been a holiday tradition for more than a decade.
Some families waited hours just to make sure their loved ones had a Thanksgiving meal. Joe Madison, one of the first people in line, said the event means a lot for families in need.
“It means a lot for the Gaffney’s family and organizations to families that are in need,” Madison said.
This year, the father-and-son duo distributed 800 free turkeys — more than last year — and both said they were surprised by the turnout.
