The B.C. Coroners Service is currently investigating two deaths in Chemainus, located on Vancouver Island. The incident prompted police to cordon off the offices of the Kaatza Group, a forestry company, on Friday morning.
Authorities responded to the scene at Hope Place, an industrial area near Fuller Lake Arena, around 4 p.m. on Friday. Police tape surrounded a small one-story building marked with the Kaatza Group logo, while forensic officers conducted examinations of the property.
Mosaic Forest Management, which operates throughout Vancouver Island, stated that the incident occurred overnight at an independent contractor's facility. The company announced it has suspended operations for the day, expressing concern for those affected. "Our thoughts are with everyone impacted," the company said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the B.C. Coroners Service, Holly Tally, confirmed the deaths but stated that no further information could be released as the investigation is ongoing.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were present at the scene but have not yet responded to requests for additional comments regarding the situation. WorkSafeBC has also been notified of the incident, which remains under investigation.
As the investigation continues, the community is left seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
