Boos came from what was left of the crowd inside Tiger Stadium as frustration and disappointment spilled out in the third quarter Saturday night. Those fans had just watched LSU squander another trip to the red zone, this time because it could not score from the 1-yard line and quarterback Michael Van Buren fumbled during a handoff on third down.
Van Buren picked up the ball and tried to improvise, but he was tackled short of the end zone. He jogged off the field as some fans booed. Van Buren put his hands on his hips and shook his head. LSU had its best field position of the night against Western Kentucky after an interception by freshman cornerback DJ Pickett, and it settled for an 18-yard field goal.
