While cooks across Britain cling to their own secret additions such as a glug of stout, a blob of marmite, a splash of vinegar or even a dash of soy sauce, food experts say the biggest flavour upgrade may come from something usually reserved for brownies and cakes.
According to Canadian Living , the addition of plain, unsweetened cocoa powder can transform the entire character of a stew.
“Cocoa powder might seem like an unusual ingredient to add to a savoury stew , but it adds an extra hit of toasty richness and colour, without any of the sweetness you might associate with dessert,” the publication said. “It’ll be your new favourite secret ingredient!” Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT
