Although its current population belies it, Sarpy County is Nebraska’s smallest, is one of its oldest. Until becoming an official U. S. territory in 1854 it was technically illegal to settle in what became Sarpy, but federal exemptions brought small populations far earlier. Through its life Sarpy County has had over 30 post offices, the earliest opened in 1849 and its latest in the 1960s.

Historian Jim McKee, who still writes with a fountain pen, invites comments or questions. Write to him in care of the Journal Star or at jim@leebooksellers.com .
