Israel launched a rare airstrike deep inside Beirut on Sunday, targeting the chief-of-staff of Hezbollah in what officials described as a blow to the group’s military command structure.

The strike hit a main road in the capital’s southern suburbs, a district known as a stronghold of the Iran-aligned militia, and triggered panic among residents, reported Reuters.

Is is the first on the capital's southern suburbs in months.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the Israel Defense Forces struck the Hezbollah chief-of-staff responsible for the group’s military build-up and rearmament, though it did not confirm whether the target, senior commander Ali Tabtabai, had been killed.
