Households are being urged to scatter sand on their driveways in November and December - not just salt. While everyone knows that salt is a cheap and effective way to stop ice, frost and snow from settling or freezing on your driveway in cold winter weather such as that which we’ve been battling this week, experts say you should use sand as well.

Sand is a useful way to stop ice from forming on your driveway while also providing extra grip compared to using salt by itself.

According to advice from weather experts at The Met Office , sand and salt used together - but never water - are the best way to defrost a driveway or pavement and prevent it from refreezing.

It says: “It's easier to move fresh, loose snow rather than hard snow that has packed together from people walking on it.
