The Humane Society of Yuma has had a “flood” of animals this past week and it needs the community’s help to care for them.
“It’s been a rough week … a rough day,” Annette Lagunas, HSOY executive director, said Friday afternoon. “We just got in 11 dogs from one home.”
That’s in addition to the 115 animals the animal shelter had already taken in this week. That includes 76 stray dogs and cats that were brought in this week by animal control officers from the various municipalities as well as several animals relinquished by pet owners.
That number isn’t counting the animals that haven’t been processed into the system yet.
“And the week isn’t over yet,” Lagunas said.
Normally, she said, the shelter takes in about 100 animals a week. “I feel like we’re drowning this week.”
