Sarnia police are heading to mediation amid prolonged contract talks, and a new union has formed to represent senior officers and managers.
“So we’re actually going to be negotiating with two parties now,” said police service board chair Paul Wiersma.

The 12-member Sarnia senior officers’ association formed Nov. 12, he said.
Having a separate bargaining unit for senior officers is common practice for police services, and was one of the recommendations in a 2021, third-party report about Sarnia’s service, by lawyer Helen Daniel, Wiersma said.
Members include Sarnia’s three inspectors, and civilian managers and directors, he said.
“They have indicated to the board their intention to negotiate and we have already been having negotiations with them,” he said.
