Kia has issued a safety recall for a popular sedan model due to issues with melting fuel tanks.

Around 250,500 vehicles are affected by the recall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration .

Documents filed with the highway safety agency stated that the main cause of the recall is a damaged valve on the fuel tank.

A damaged check valve can allow air to enter into the fuel tank, making it expand. The expanded tank can come into contact with hot exhaust components of the car, which can melt the tank.

The melted tank could leak fuel, and a fuel leak could increase the risk of a fire, according to recall documents.

The recall affects 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 model years of Kia’s popular K5 sedan, which used to be sold as the Kia Optima.
