HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - As the new year approaches, law enforcement officials are preparing to crack down on illegal fireworks, and on Sunday, they gave owners a final chance to get rid of them without getting in trouble.
During a buyback event at the Honolulu Police Department’s training facility in Waipahu , officials collected 510 pounds of pyrotechnics with no questions asked. Nearly 10% of the illegal fireworks surrendered were the kind that only professionals are allowed to have with a permit.
To show how “it doesn’t take much to get you in trouble,” Department of Law Enforcement director Mike Lambert pointed to a 27-gallon box full of illegal fireworks that weighed about 50 pounds.
