“Hello there, good morning and welcome to this first edition of Radio Scotland Breakfast.”

If the hand of media history had been resting on Laura Maciver’s shoulder when writing those words it hadn’t lingered for long.

There was no grand announcement, no “Is it snowing where you are Mr Thiessen? (first spoken words on radio, 1900), or “This is 2LO calling” (first words on BBC radio, 1922). Just short and to the point from Maciver, a Ronseal, does what it says on the tin kind of intro. And why not?

BBC Scotland was not, after all, reinventing the radio wheel here. They were simply replacing one breakfast radio show, Good Morning Scotland, with another. That this should have caused such a stir says much about the central role played by t
