State pensioners have been alerted that a long-standing tradition could be abolished by the Labour Party government and the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ). The future of the Triple Lock, a benefit state pensioners have enjoyed since 2011, is uncertain.

Currently, the triple lock adds £12 billion annually to government expenses, but the Labour Party has pledged its support, albeit with conditions. Experts have suggested that the government might adopt Australia's "smoothed earnings link" model after the next election.
