Five Michigan rest areas are set to close for the winter season on Dec. 1, the Michigan Department of Transportation said on Monday, Nov. 24.
Michigan has 61 rest areas in total and most of the other 56 are slated to remain open throughout the winter "to maintain the convenience and safety they provide to motorists," MDOT said in a release.
"Many travelers look to our network of rest areas for a safe stopping point on their travels, which is why we keep as many open as possible year-round," MDOT Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Division Administrator Kim Zimmer said.
Michigan's roadside parks, mostly found along "M" roads and other two-lane highways, have already closed for the season.
