Udo Kier, a legendary German actor who played Dr. Frankenstein and collaborated with directors like Andy Warhol, Werner Herzog and Lars von Trier, died on Sunday, his partner, Delbert McBride told Variety.

He was 81. Cause of death was not revealed.

Kier, a character actor who often portrayed eccentric and deviant figures, appeared in more than 220 films in both leading and supporting roles throughout Europe and Norther America.

“I liked the attention, so I became an actor,” he told Variety ‘s Peter Debruge in a 2024 interview .

He is perhaps best known for starring in the titular roles in both 1973’s “Flesh for Frankenstein” and 1974’s “Blood for Dracula.”
