An Australian far-right lawmaker has sparked outrage amongst her fellow senators after she arrived in Parliament on Monday wearing a burqa.
Senator Pauline Hanson was accused of racism when she showed up in a full face covering worn by some Muslim women.
The stunt comes after she was denied permission to introduce a bill that would ban them in public.
Senate proceedings were suspended when she refused to remove the burqa.
“This is a racist senator displaying blatant racism and Islamophobia,” said Mehreen Faruqi, a Muslim senator from the state of New South Wales, according to NBC News .
Fellow Muslim Fatima Payman of Western Australia said it was “disgraceful” and “absolutely unconstitutional” and accused her of “disrespecting” Muslims and Muslim Australians.
