MARSEILLE — Thomas Concannon is no stranger to hairy away days.
As the man who does reconaissance for England trips on behalf of the Football Supporters’ Association, he has put together plans to keep fans safe for some of international football’s most highly-charged fixtures. But even he has seen nothing like Newcastle’s Champions League trip to Marseille this week.
“The British are on edge,” declared Marseille’s local newspaper La Provence on Monday ahead of what it branded an “influx” of Newcastle fans. And it’s no wonder given the hefty list of restrictions put on the estimated 3,300 away fans who will descend on the south of France for Tuesday night’s game.
