PHILADELPHIA - Down 5-0 in his 285-pound semifinal match of the Keystone Classic Sunday, Virginia Tech sophomore Jimmy Mullen looked to his corner.
“Coach (Jared) Haught and coach (Zach) Tanelli were telling me you’re the best in the country, you got this, you’re not tired, giving me motivation to the point I couldn’t doubt myself,” said Mullen.
Mullen began a furious comeback against Drexel’s Nate Schon in the third period. Down 5-2 and with Schon holding a riding time advantage, Mullen thought he had a match-tying takedown only to have it waved off.
A three-time state heavyweight champion at St. Joseph (Mont.), Mullen went back to work and took Schon down before cutting him with 29 seconds left.
Mullen got in on a shot with 10 seconds to go but wasn’t initially awarded the points. H
