KANSAS CITY, Mo - Thanksgiving and the day before are the top two days in the United States for a cooking fire to happen in a home.

Cooking fires are the cause of 44 percent of home fires in the United States. The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City and Northwest Missouri are offering safety steps to prevent such an incident this Thanksgiving.

They include staying in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. Using a timer to remind yourself of cooking times. Lastly, keep anything that can catch on fire like potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, and towels away from the stove top. Missourians are also reminded to install a smoke alarm near the kitchen and make sure the batteries are working properly.
