Donald Glover, known for his musical persona Childish Gambino, has disclosed details about a serious health issue that led him to cancel his tour last year. During a performance at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles, Glover revealed that he had suffered a stroke. The 42-year-old artist shared this news with the audience on Saturday night, explaining that he had experienced severe head pain while performing in Louisiana. Despite the discomfort, he continued with the show.
"I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke,’" Glover recounted. His health scare prompted him to initially postpone his tour dates in September 2024, but he later decided to cancel the remaining shows in North America, the U.K., and Europe to focus on recovery. At that time, Glover expressed the need to confront his health issues seriously, stating, "My path to recovery is something I need to confront seriously."
In his recent remarks, Glover also mentioned that doctors discovered a hole in his heart, which required him to undergo two surgeries. He reflected on the experience, saying, "They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing."
Glover expressed feelings of disappointment about canceling the tour, particularly noting his unfulfilled promise to visit Ireland. He shared a light-hearted quote from his wife, saying, "If this life is the flavor, as soon as I’m done, give me another scoop."
The tour was intended to be a farewell to his Childish Gambino persona, as Glover had previously announced his retirement from the stage name and indicated that his fifth studio album would be his last.
Glover's health issues highlight the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms, which can include face drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulties. According to health experts, nearly 80% of premature strokes and heart disease can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices.
As Glover continues his recovery, he has expressed gratitude for the support he has received from fans and the public during this challenging time.
