A 75-year-old security guard was found dead at a Virginia landfill after officers were called to check on him overnight, police said.

A welfare check was conducted shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, at the Prince William County Landfill Complex in the 14800 block of Dumfries Road in Manassas when they were unable to get in touch with the guard.

According to investigators, “contact was unable to be made with a security guard at the complex.” 

When officers arrived, they found the man unconscious and unresponsive in a water basin on the property. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said that “preliminarily, there were no signs of foul play concerning the death.” Police said more information will be released “if deemed necessary.”

The investigation is ongoing.
