Former senator Doug Jones formally entered the race to be Alabama’s next governor Monday, setting the stage for a potential rematch against U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Auburn.

It had been rumored Jones, a Democrat who represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 2018 to 2021, would enter the 2026 gubernatorial contest. Those rumors were confirmed when Jones filed paperwork to run for office with the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office on Monday.
