Thomas Chabot of the Ottawa Senators has been placed back on the injury list just one game after returning from an upper-body muscle injury. Chabot will not play against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night as the Senators continue their seven-game road trip.
Chabot reinjured himself during the third period of Saturday's 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks. He took a shot on goal and immediately went to the bench, where he discussed his condition with athletic therapist Dom Nicoletta. Coach Travis Green reported that Chabot is day-to-day, but there is no set timeline for his return. Given the nature of the injury, the team will take every precaution.
In his previous game against the Sharks, Chabot logged 21 minutes and 45 seconds of ice time while reuniting with his former defensive partner, Nick Jensen. He had missed three games due to the initial injury sustained on November 11 against the Dallas Stars.
The Senators did not hold a practice on Sunday, leaving uncertainty about the lineup for the game against the Kings. Chabot spoke to the media after the Sharks game but did not address his injury status. Green also did not provide updates until Monday morning.
Chabot's first injury had raised concerns about the need for surgery, and it is likely he is undergoing similar evaluations again. Initially, he was expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks. Chabot expressed his eagerness to return, stating, "There is nothing worse than missing time. It felt great to be back out there with my teammates."
In response to Chabot's injury, the Senators sent defenseman Lassi Thomson back to their AHL affiliate in Belleville. Meanwhile, Nikolas Matinpalo, who was injured in a previous game, skated on Friday but was a scratch against the Sharks.
Despite the injuries, the Senators are determined not to use them as an excuse. Defenseman Jake Sanderson noted, "A lot of guys have stepped up their game and played really well. I could say good things about everybody; they’ve all played so solid."
If needed, the Senators may recall Dennis Gilbert from Belleville, following his recent acquisition from the Philadelphia Flyers. Winger Ridly Greig is also day-to-day and will miss his third consecutive game.
The Senators are expected to receive a boost with the return of captain Brady Tkachuk from long-term injury reserve. Green indicated that Tkachuk is likely to play soon, possibly on Friday against the St. Louis Blues. Tkachuk has been recovering from thumb surgery and has missed 19 games since the injury occurred on October 13.
The Senators have performed well without Tkachuk, holding a 10-4-4 record. As they face tough opponents in the coming games, including the Golden Knights and Canadiens, Tkachuk's return could significantly impact the team's performance. Ottawa is currently 2-0-0 on their road trip, aiming for a sweep of their three-game stretch in California for the first time since 2015.
