The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from Trevor Murray, a former employee of Swiss bank UBS Group AG, who sought to reinstate a $1 million jury award he won in a whistleblower retaliation case.
Murray alleged he was fired by UBS in 2012 for reporting what he considered unlawful workplace conduct related to the bank’s compliance with securities laws.
Flashback: A jury previously found in Murray’s favor, granting him a $1 million award. • The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the jury’s decision, ruling that Murray hadn’t met the required legal standard to prove retaliation under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. • The appellate court held that Murray failed to show that UBS intentionally retaliated against him solely because of his whistleblowing activities.
