HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The man accused of causing a multi-vehicle wrong-way crash that left a local mother fighting for her life made his first court appearance Monday, three weeks after the incident on Riverdale Street in West Springfield.
Carlos Maldonado, 37, of Springfield, appeared before a judge in a wheelchair due to injuries he sustained in the November 5 crash. Police said the crash happened after a pursuit that started in Holyoke when officers spotted Maldonado’s vehicle on Route 5 on the morning of November 5. Maldonado reportedly had two outstanding warrants and a stolen gun at the time, according to authorities.
When police tried to pull him over, Maldonado hit a police cruiser and fled. He drove the wrong way before crashing head-on into a blue Nissan near a car dealer
