The passage of legislation granting sweeping control over school boards to Queen’s Park appears to be another nail in the coffin for Ontario’s trustees – the oldest form of democracy in Canada.
Last week, Bill 33 passed third reading at Queen’s Park with little debate and bypassing committee, opening the door for the province to develop a plan to eliminate elected school board trustees altogether.

“The government just voted to take away the rights of students, parents and communities to have a say in our local schools,” said NDP education critic Chandra Pasma (Ottawa West–Nepean). “They did it without inviting people to tell them what they thought about that idea.”
The legislation follows Education Minister Paul Calandra’s recent announcement mandating London-base
