SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Gov. Janet Mills and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, both Democrats, held at a roundtable event Monday in South Portland, where they heard from brokers and consumers alarmed by next year’s rising costs as thousands of Mainers are bracing for dramatic increases in health insurance premiums.

Health‑insurance broker Katherine Conley of Buxton said that some families are considering insuring only one child because premiums are expected to skyrocket next year.

"I’ve seen increases of over 800 percent for people," Conley told NEWS CENTER Maine. “These people are making very difficult decisions.”

Conley said she even expects 20 to 30 of her roughly 500 clients to drop their coverage altogether.
