For a handful of years, my parents lived next to the green of the 1st hole of a golf course in South Texas. They loved being able to get up early in the morning to play, mostly carrying their clubs, or dragging them in a little wheeled push-cart, navigating wild shots into the rough and basking in the beauty of a shot that lands perfectly on the fairway.
But a recent study published in JAMA Network Open reveals that people who live within a mile of a golf course, within their water service areas, had “126 percent higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease,” or 2.26 times the risk, compared to people who lived further away. In other words, if your neighborhood shares water with a golf course, your chances of developing the nervous system disease increases drastically.
