WASHINGTON D.C., DC — The clouds were heavy, threatening more rain across the Washington D.C. area. Carol Rossiter wasn't worried about the rain, but her eyes were fixed on the sky.
She was struck by the shape of three stainless-steel spires reaching towards the clouds at the site of the Air Force Memorial.
“I was one of the first women in the Air Force to work on planes and jets,” said Rossiter. “So that was pretty exciting.”
Honor Flight Columbus gave Rossiter a chance to see her service memorial for the first time.
“It does remind me of the jet streams when they take off,” said Rossiter, as she craned her neck to the sky, taking in the height of the structure, which stands at 402 feet above sea level, overlooking the Pentagon and adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery.
