DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WILX) - Law enforcement officials say holiday thieves are among the crowds of shoppers, as the season of spending approaches in Mid-Michigan.
Consumers lost $12.5 billion to retail theft and fraud during last year’s holiday shopping season. This year, the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office says it’s trying to protect every dime.
The department is cracking down on organized retail crime by conducting large-scale sting operations.
During these operations, Eaton County deputies will get into position, staking out parking lots, roadways and storefronts, watching for signs of potential theft.
“I look for people sitting in the car, just kind of off by themselves, maybe they’re a getaway driver type thing, they’re the lookout,” said Captain Rob Block.
