Lloydminster RCMP have dealt a $7.65 million blow to the illegal tobacco trade after seizing 8.8 million unstamped cigarettes during a traffic stop last Tuesday. The semi-truck, stopped on 44 Street, was found to be carrying the contraband when the driver could not provide proper documentation for the load. Police obtained a search warrant, leading to the seizure of the truck, trailer, and all its contents.
The driver, 33-year-old Gurjant Singh of Surrey, B.C., faces multiple charges, including fraud, unlawful possession of tobacco, importing tobacco into Alberta, and possession of property obtained by crime. Singh was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster court on Dec. 16.
“This seizure represents a significant disruption to the illegal tobacco trade,” said
