PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — The Prince George’s County sheriff’s office is offering a warning about scammers posing as deputies who are telling residents they risk being arrested if they don’t pay up.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scammers are using the real names of “sworn personnel” and claiming that the person they’re calling has an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court.
The victims are told not to hang up the phone and then pressured to pay a fee using gift cards or Bitcoin, or risk being arrested.
The sheriff’s office says residents have been swindled out of more than $12,000 in the past week alone.
They wanted to remind residents that they will never call and demand payment or request personal financial information.
