The Oregon Department of Education recently published new data showing more than 15,000 local students were chronically absent from school last year.
The numbers show most Salem schools remain well below pre-pandemic attendance rates. But both attendance rates and improvement vary widely from school to school.

In general, district schools that serve a high share of low-income students had attendance drop further during Covid, and have been slower to recover.
