BELL COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) - A horse in Bell County has been put down after testing positive for the Herpes virus. This after owners attended a Waco event earlier in November.
“We have eleven horses that have fallen ill,” says Bud Dinges, a state veterinarian with the Texas Animal Health Commission.
The EHV-1 virus can cause damage to the horse’s respiratory, reproductive and nervous systems.
“We’re seeing a strain that’s the neuropathic strain and we are seeing horses that are affected neurologically,” Dinges says.
The horse in Bell County had to be euthanized. Dinges says a neurological decline would be the cause.
“The quality of life. The horse being down and not being able to get up,” he says.
