Latorra Garland is a mom on a mission.

She’s the newest member of the National Blood Donation Hall of Fame for a cause close to her heart.

“It gives me a reason to get up after losing my son,” said Garland.

At 13 years old, her seemingly healthy son Jacob was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer.

“He was the happy child, video games, going to school, coming home one day limping and we noticed it,” said Garland.

After his first round of chemo, Jacob went into respiratory distress.

He needed multiple blood transfusions and within days, he was breathing on his own again.

“Wanting to play games, and all the things he used to do, like asking for weird foods so just having that time with him really gave me hope, and I always wondering what if blood donations were not available,” said Garland
