KOLOA — A male visitor died Sunday afternoon after being pulled from waters off Lawai Beach.

On Sunday at approximately 4 p.m., first responders were dispatched to Lawai Beach following reports of an unresponsive snorkeler. Bystanders brought the individual to shore and began performing CPR. Kauai Fire Department personnel continued lifesaving efforts until medics transported him to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Gavin Phillips, a 56-year-old man from California.

An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death, but foul play is not suspected. The Kauai Police Department extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Gavin Phillips during this difficult time.
