A reckless driver who ploughed into a young woman walking her dog while doing 63mph has been jailed.

Danielle Mitten, 34, lost control and smashed into Lucy Atkins, 20, who was walking her family’s Lakeland Terrier Simba. Lucy, who had just finished her first year at university, was killed along with Simba in the crash at 8.45am on June 24 last year.

Prior to the crash on West Boulevard, Quinton, Birmingham, Mitten had been driving at 82mph, more than double the 40mph speed limit.

West Midlands Police said Mitten struck Lucy and Simba at 63mph. Mitten, of Birmingham, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for five years and four months.
