Apparent debris from a small plane was discovered in Lake Pontchartrain overnight Monday as crews continue the search for a missing Cessna Tuesday morning near New Orleans’ Lakefront Airport, according to the US. Coast Guard.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries crews discovered the supposed debris around 11 p.m., Petty Officer Cheyenne Basurto said, about four-and-a-half hours after the plane was reported missing. A Coast Guard helicopter also spotted water discoloration just after 7:30 p.m.
The Cessna was reported missing just after 6:30 p.m. Monday after losing contact with air traffic controllers over Lake Pontchartrain about 4 miles north of of the airport, according to the Coast Guard.
The number of people on board was unclear as of Tuesday morning.
