A significant fire has erupted in an industrial building in Southall, west London, prompting the evacuation of residents and the sending home of pupils from nearby schools. Ealing Council announced on X that residents in affected areas are being evacuated and that rest centres have been established. They warned of expected disruption for the next eight hours.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that 150 firefighters, supported by 25 fire engines, have been battling the blaze at a two-storey structure on Bridge Road since 8.55am. The building houses both warehouse and retail space. The fire was declared a "major incident" shortly after midday due to the potential presence of fireworks and gas cylinders, which have complicated firefighting efforts.
Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne, the LFB's Incident Commander, stated, "Due to the complex nature of the site, and the size of the fire, this will be a protracted incident with crews continuing firefighting operations through the day." He confirmed that nearby schools and a block of flats have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
The fire has generated a substantial amount of smoke, with the plume visible across West London. Residents in the immediate vicinity have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed. Traffic disruptions are anticipated, and the public is urged to avoid the area if possible.
The London Ambulance Service has reported no injuries to the public or emergency personnel, although its Hazardous Area Response Team remains on-site. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
