COLUMBUS, OHIO (WXIX) - In a case that sets statewide precedent, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that police are crime victims if attacked in the line of duty and entitled to privacy under Marsy’s Law.
That means their names can be redacted from public records about the incident.
The case stems from a 2023 police-involved fatal shooting on Interstate 70 near Columbus.
The Columbus Dispatch has now lost its fight for unredacted dashboard and body camera footage of the two officers who were shot at by an armed robbery suspect.
One of the officers was shot five times and critically hurt. A suspect died at the scene, and the other two are in federal prisons for their roles.
Marsy’s Law, an amendment to Ohio’s constitution, defines a victim as any person against whom a criminal offens
