( NewsNation ) — Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va. , and his wife have agreed to pay more than $5 million to the IRS in what the agency says is unpaid federal income taxes dating back to 2009.

According to court filings , Justice and his wife, Cathy, agreed to pay that amount just hours after they were sued on behalf of IRS tax collectors, who said they had repeatedly attempted to recover the unpaid taxes but were unsuccessful.

The joint motion , signed by the attorneys for both the senator and the Department of Justice, shows the pair must pay $5,164,739.75, plus “statutory interest and other additions to tax accruing thereaft
