Mayor-elect Helena Moreno has released a 2026 budget proposal that includes nearly $150 million in spending cuts and furloughs for some city workers.

The plan, unveiled Tuesday, represents Moreno's attempt to steer New Orleans through her first year in office as the city faces a significant deficit handed over from the outgoing Cantrell administration.

It replaces an earlier spending proposal introduced by Mayor LaToya Cantrell, which featured 30% cuts to most city departments.

“That’s like taking a bulldozer to the budget. We wanted to be more careful,” Moreno said at a press conference Tuesday to describe her revised plan. “We wanted to be more surgical.”
