Summit County residents should be aware of a scam involving a demand for money to avoid arrest.
The scammers are using fake arrest warrants with court and law enforcement officials’ names to pressure residents to pay up or go to jail, said Alison McCarty, the administrative judge in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
“Please be wary of these types of calls,” McCarty said in a news release. “The caller is very convincing.”
When warrants are issued, they are never resolved by law enforcement or court personnel calling defendants to demand money for fees or bond costs. Defendants are required to appear before the court, McCarty said.
There is increased potential for fraud because of the use of AI technology, the judge said.
