A 'dedicated' NHS midwife has been left fighting for her life on a ventilator after her dream holiday to Barbados turned into a nightmare.

Alison Phillips, from Whitefield, Bury, flew over 4,000 miles to the Caribbean Island with her mates on November 2 to mark her 60th birthday, but began to feel ill not long after arriving.

The mum-of-two, who had taken out travel insurance for the 'trip of a lifetime', first saw a doctor after showing symptoms of a chest infection but was sent back to her hotel with antibiotics , according to her daughter Abi, reports the Manchester Evening News .
